Austin, TX is the Fastest Growing Population in the U.S.

Austin is not just one of the fastest growing cities in the United States, but it joins Houston and San Antonio among the top five.

In 2013, Austin had a 2.3 percent growth rate for the population. Between 2013 and 2014, it welcomed another 25,600 people, bringing its total to just over 900,000.

There are a lot of reasons that people are flocking to the hometown of Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey (link to Oscar speeches story). Here are just a few of them:

Job Opportunities

Technology, education and healthcare jobs are on the rise in Austin, and the median pay here is relatively high.

The job growth rate was 3.1 percent in 2013, and the median salary was $63,200. People have plenty of job opportunities in the city, as well as the chance to make a comfortable living.

Austin also has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country. It was last at 4.9 percent.

Real Estate

Despite the growing population, real estate in Austin remains relatively affordable.

The median home price in Austin is currently $293,100, and Zillow reports that they have gone up 10.3 percent over the last year. Though the market took off this year, it will slow down. Zillow expects prices to rise only 3.9 percent in the next year.

Buyers have the opportunity to find a beautiful home and watch its value grow over time. The more attractive the city becomes, the higher the home values will climb.

Climate

Austin enjoys a warm climate throughout much of the year and has only mild winters. It sits between the Texas Hill Country and the Blackland Prairies, which provides beautiful views and plenty of recreational opportunities, as well.

It gets humid in Austin, but the area doesn’t experience much severe weather.

Austin is a beautiful place with a lot to offer. It’s no wonder the population is climbing quickly, and we expect it to continue to do so.
